Abstract

723,016. Moulding machines and processes; foundry plant. COLEMAN-WALLWORK CO., Ltd., and TAIT, W. April 20, 1953 [Jan. 21, 1952], No. 1642/52. Class 83 (1). Moulding apparatus comprises a runway 4, Fig. 1, along which patterns 2 supported on pallets 3 can be advanced intermittently by a pushing means 19 to stations A to E, Fig. 2, for cleaning the pattern, application of mould box 6, filling the box with sand from hopper 8, ramming the sand and stripping the mould from the pattern, respectively. Where two runways are mounted together as shown in Fig. 2, tables 5 at stations F may be provided on which the stripped patterns are passed manually from the end of one runway to the commencement of the other. Cleansing at each station A occurs under a hood, not shown, and is performed by air jets; a parting fluid also may be sprayed on. These operations may be initiated automatically each time the pusher 19 is retracted. Box 6 is positioned manually at station B and a filling frame and downgate may be added. The doors 9 of hopper 8 at station C are operated pneumatically and the hopper may be common to both runways and may measure automatically the appropriate amounts of sand. Facing and backing sand may be supplied successively. At station D the pallet is raised to squeeze the sand against a bridge 11, and afterwards jolted, and to separate the pallet so affected from adjacent pallets, stops 14, Fig. 5, are engaged by levers 12 pivoted to the pallets, and the levers cam the pallets apart slightly. At station E the pattern is stripped by a turn-over machine or the mould box is lifted from the pattern by hand or by four pins 15 which are pressed up through aligned holes in the pallet and pattern plate, a preliminary vibration being applied. After separation of the box and pattern, the box is removed manually or by overhead tackle and passed to station G where it is closed.
