Abstract

722,965. Rotary engines. PAWL, W. S. Oct. 27, 1952, No. 26981/52. Class 110 (2). A rotary engine comprises an inner helical element 1<SP>1</SP>, working within a helically-formed passage in an outer member 2<SP>1</SP>. The inner member rotates about its axis, and the axes of the element and passage rotate about each other in the opposite direction. The two axes are not parallel with each other, and the element 1<SP>1</SP>, in any spherical plane centred at the point of intersection of the two axes, has a circular section equal to the width of the passage in the member 2<SP>1</SP>. This passage has a section with semi-circular ends, the centres being spaced from the axis of the element 1<SP>1</SP> by a distance twice the eccentricity of the two axes. The pitch of the element 1<SP>1</SP> is half that of the passage along any corresponding increment of the axes, and the pitch diameter of the element 1<SP>1</SP> is twice the eccentricity of the axes. The arrangement provides overlapping chambers 3<SP>1</SP>, and air entering at the inlet and confined in any one chamber is compressed. Fuel is admitted at 19 and the mixture ignited by spark-plugs 25, and the gases are allowed to expand in the chambers 31 on their way to the exhaust. In the drawing a member 10 joins the two parts of the element 1<SP>1</SP> adjacent the fuel inlet and ignition means. The outer ends of the element 1<SP>1</SP> carry pinions 11, 12, which engage internal gears 13, 14 on the casing 2<SP>1</SP> to provide rigidity, and the casing, which is mounted on stationary bearings 15, 16, carries a gear 28 which meshes with and drives a gear 29 on a power take-off shaft 30. In Fig. 3 (not shown), a similar arrangement as that shown in Fig. 2 is adapted to a two-wheel drive for a vehicle. Specification 427,475 and U.S.A. Specification 2,553,548 are referred to.
