Abstract

Aqueous solutions of heat-hardenable urea-formaldehyde condensates also contain a polyhydric phenol and a primary aromatic amine. They are useful as adhesives and have an increased shelf life without an unduly prolonged hardening time. Suitable polyhydric phenols are resorcinol and phloroglucinol. Suitable amines are aniline and toluidine. Ammonium chloride may be added to reduce the hardening time of layers of the dried solutions. At least 5 gms. of polyhydric phenol and 0.05-0.07 mol. of primary amine are preferably added/100 gms. of urea-formaldehyde condensate. Examples compare the shelf lives of solutions with and without added ammonium chloride and containing aromatic amine but no phenol. They also describe experimental manufacture and testing of plywood employing solutions according to the invention, and comparing them with other solutions.
