Abstract

722,673. Engine-indicators. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Feb. 3, 1953, No. 3029/53. Addition to 693,950. Class 106.(2). An engine indicator as claimed in Claim 1 of the parent Specification is modified by the addition of means to invert the negative pulses coming from the " divide-by-two " circuit so that corresponding positive pulses are obtained for operating the gas-filled tube in the time-base. The original coupling circuit between the anodes of the " divide-by-two " circuit V2a, V2b, and the gas-filled tube V3 is shown in Fig. 1 and is made via the third bank SIC of a selector switch. In the parent Specification the smaller positive pulse coming from V2a or V2b was used for triggering the tube V3, and a larger and more reliable negative pulse was not employed because its polarity was not suitable for triggering the tube V3 direct. The modified circuit shown in Fig. 2 includes a transformer T1 so connected between the " divide-by-two " circuit and the tube V3 that the large negative pulse is reversed in polarity and is applied as a positive pulse to V3 control grid, the smaller positive pulse no longer being employed for this purpose. Fig. 3 shows a further modification in which the reversal of the pulse sign is effected by a choke Ll which resonates with its selfcapacitance causing a large enough overshoot on the second half-cycle to produce a positive pulse to fire the tube V3. A condenser C is added so as to provide a low-impedance path to the ground line E from the earth end of the inductance L1. An additional switch bank SID is provided in either modification to provide a free-running position for the grid of V3 as shown at position 1.
