Abstract

722,664. Magneto-strictive filters. COLLINS RADIO CO. Jan. 20, 1953, No. 1669/53. Class 40 (8). An electromechanical filter comprises a series of discs 14-20 joined by a number of rods 21 attached, e.g. by welding, to their peripheries, magnetostrictive input and output driving rods 13, 22 being attached to the peripheries of the outermost discs 14, 20 and extending respectively through input and output coils 12, 23. The input and output rods 13, 22 are polarized by permanent magnets 15, 26. The thickness and diameter of the discs determine the resonant frequency of the system and each disc is tuned separately before assembly. They are preferably made from a nickel-iron alloy having a high Q and zero thermo-elastic coefficient. For a pass band centring on 455 kc/s. the end discs are tuned to 455.8 kc/s. and the inner discs to 455.2 kc/s. The filter may be supported from the nodal rings on the end discs 14, 19. Alternatively the rings may be'clamped loosely about their peripheries. Specification 703,144 is referred to.
