Abstract

A method of preparing an alkali or alkaline earth metal salt of 5,8,8a-trihydro-4-hydroxy-3-alkoxy - 8a - methyl - 1 - naphthalenone comprises treating a 4a,5,8,8a-tetrahydro-2-alkoxy-4a-methyl-1,4-naphthoquinone in which the alkoxy group contains from one to five carbon atoms with an alkaline derivative of an alkali or alkaline earth metal in an inert organic solvent. Suitable alkaline derivatives are the alkali metal and alkaline earth metal alkoxides, oxides and hydroxides, e.g. sodium, potassium and lithium hydroxides and calcium, barium or magnesium oxides or hydroxides. The product may be precipitated by pouring the reaction mixture into a non-solvent for the salt, e.g. open chain and cyclic ethers. In examples: (1) the sodium salt of dl-5,8,8a-trihydro-4-hydroxy-3-methoxy-8a-methyl-1-naphthalenone is prepared by reacting dl-trans.-4a,5,8,8a-tetrahydro-2-methoxy-4a-methyl-1, 4-naphthoquinone with a methanol solution of sodium or sodium hydroxide. The naphthoquinone derivative is recovered by neutralizing the salt with acid; (2) the same product is obtained using the cis-naphthoquinone derivative in place of the trans.-compound of example (1). In a generally similar manner are prepared (3) the potassium salt of dl-5,8,8a-trihydro-4-hydroxy-3-methoxy-8a-methyl-1-naphthalenone; (4) the potassium salt of dl-5,8,8a-trihydro-4-hydroxy-3-ethoxy - 8a - methyl - 1 - naphthalenone; (5) the barium salt of d-5,8,8a-trihydro-4-hydroxy-3 - n - propoxy - 8a - methyl - 1 - naphthalenone; (6) the calcium salt of dl-5,8,8a-trihydro-4-hydroxy - 3 - n - pentoxy - 8a - methyl - 1 - naphthalenone; (7) the barium salt of dl-5,8,8a - trihydro - 4 - hydroxy - 3 - n - butoxy - 8a - methyl - 1 - naphthalenone; (8) the barium salt of dl-5,8,8a-trihydro-4-hydroxy-3-methoxy-8a-methyl-1-naphthalenone.
