Abstract

721,810. Operating clutches. DOORNE, H. J. VAN. Jan. 21, 1953 [Jan. 28, 1952]. No. 1812/53 Class 80 (2). [Also in Group XXX]. In a winch of the type set out in Specification 464,384, [Group XXX], a toggle-mechanism 43-46 (Fig. 3) is provided, the toggle being spring pressed by a spring inserted in the winch coupling and being connected (by slot 40) to pawl 29 so that when the pawl locks the draw hook of the tractor, the spring moves the toggle to disengage the coupling. As shown (Fig. 3), handle 32 operates pawl 29 against its retaining spring 27 through the medium of linkage 33, 35, 36, 28, and handle 49 operates the winch coupling fork shaft 11 through the medium of linkage 51, 52, 53, 54, 46, 45. The two linkage systems are coupled by toggle 46, 43 and by pin-and-slot linkage 40, 39, 37. In operation the operator swings handle 32 to the right so as to pull pawl 29 to the left and so release the draw hook, and, owing to the pin-and-slot 40-39, this movement has no effect upon the shaft 11 so that the coupling connected to the latter remains uncoupled. Then the operator swings handle 49 to the right so that toggle 46-43 swings to the left and couples the coupling to drive the winch and let out the drawhook. Again, when the drawhook is pulled in, it releases pawl 29 which moves to the right, which movement, through linkage 37, 41, swings the toggle back over to the right and disengages the coupling and therefore the winch drive. The two handles 32, 49 may be combined into one handle which operates both systems of levers. The coupling operated by rotation of shaft 11 is shown in Fig. 1 and consists of a clutch member 9 which slides along splines on driven shaft 4 so that its teeth engage or disengage the teeth of driving shaft 2. Member 9 carries sleeve 20 which slides on the said member 9, the pin 22 of member 9 engaging slot 21 of sleeve 20 and abutment 25 fixed on member 9 limits this movement of sleeve 20. Two springs influence, the two movements, thus disengaging spring 19 is positioned between the casing and sleeve 20, and engaging spring 26 is positioned between sleeve 20 and member 9. The clutch is operated by rotation of shaft 11, the shaft moving sleeve 20 by engagement of legs 13 with disc 16 secured on the sleeve so that whether the clutch is engaged or disengaged, the shaft 11 is subject to the influence of one or both springs, whereby the toggle joint of Fig. 3 is held at either of its extreme positions.
