Abstract

The invention comprises new ethers of aromatic aldehydes of the general formula R-Yn-O.X.CHO (wherein R represents hydrogen or an aliphatic, alicyclic or aromatic hydrocarbon radical, X represents a substituted or unsubstituted arylene group, n is 1-20, and Y represents <FORM:0721479/IV (b)/1> or <FORM:0721479/IV (b)/2> where R1 is methyl or methoxymethyl, or may be hydrogen when n>1, and the preparation thereof by the action of esters of glycol or polyglycol ethers R.Yn.OH on hydroxy aromatic aldehydes or their alkali salts. The hydroxy aromatic aldehydes may carry halogen, alkyl or alkoxy substituents. The glycol ether-esters used include benzene-sulphonates, p-toluenesulphonates and halides. In examples p-hydroxybenzaldehyde is converted into polyglycol ethers in which the OH group is replaced by the following groups: CH3-(OCH2CH2)n-O-, where n is 1-20, C4H9-(O.CH2.CH2)2-O-, HO-(CH2.CH2O)1-20, H-(OC3H6)1-20-O-, CH3-(OC3H6)1-3-O-, <FORM:0721479/IV (b)/3> and <FORM:0721479/IV (b)/4> other aldehydes converted into similar polyglycol ethers include 1 : 4-hydroxynaphthaldehyde, salicylaldehyde, 2- and 3-chloro-4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, 3 : 5 - dichloro - 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, and vanillin (metamethoxy - 4 - hydroxybenzaldehyde); iodo- and bromo-substituted aromatic aldehydes are also specified. Alkyl-, cycloalkyl- and aromatic-ethers of one polyglycol group may be used, in the polyglycol reagent, and these may have mol. weights up to 1450, having 1-20 glycol ether units of the above types.
