Abstract

1440049 # - Chloroethoxynitrodiphenylethers MITSUI TOATSU CHEMICALS Inc 27 Aug 1974 [28 Aug 1973 19 Dec 1973] 37488/74 Heading C2C Diphenyl ethers of general Formula I wherein X which may be the same or different, represents Cl, F, CH 3 or CF 3 and n is 1, 2 or 3 may be prepared by condensing a compound of Formula II wherein X and n are as defined above and Hal is halogen with ethylene glycol in the presence of an acid-binding agent and treating the resulting condensate with a chlorinating agent. 2,4 - Dichloro - 3<SP>1</SP>- # - hydroxyethoxy) - 41- nitrodiphenylether is prepared by condensation of ethylene glycol with 2,4-dichloro-4<SP>1</SP>-nitrodiphenylether in the presence of KOH. Herbicidal compositions comprise at least one compound of Formula I together with a carrier.
