Abstract

1331486 Cyclic sulphonium compounds DOW CHEMICAL CORP 15 Oct 1970 [15 Oct 1969 (2)] 49125/70 Heading C2C [Also in Divisions B2 and C3] The invention comprises compounds (I) and (II), where R is hydrogen, chlorine or bromine or hydroxy or C 1-4 alkoxy; R<SP>1</SP> is hydrogen, chlorine or bromine or C 1-4 alkyl; a is 1 or 2; each S atom is ortho or para to the phenolic oxygen atom; each of A and B is -CH 2 - or -CHR<SP>1</SP>-; and c is 1 or 2; Z is -CR<SP>11</SP> 2 -, -O-, -S-, -(C m H 2m )O- or -OCO(C n H 2n )COO-, where R<SP>11</SP> is hydrogen or C 1-4 alkyl, m is an integer of 1-6, n is 0 or an integer of 1-6; x+y is 0 or an integer of 1-20 and X- is a non-basic inorganic anion or a compound of Formulµ (V) to (IX). The compounds of the invention are made by reacting an appropriately substituted phenol having an active hydrogen atom ortho or para to the hydroxy group with the appropriate cyclic sulphide in the presence of chlorine or with the appropriate cyclic sulphoxide in the presence of HCl to give the sulphonium chloride or by reqcting an alkylthiophenol with a 1,4- or 1,5-dihaloalkane and if desired converting the sulting salt into another salt. Halogen substituted compounds (I) may be prepared by direct halogenation of the corresponding unsubstituted compounds. The compounds (II) may be prepared by known methods from the compounds (I).
