Abstract
Impure solutions containing Vitamin B12 and variants thereof, such as those obtained in the production of antibiotics by fermentation techniques, are purified by contacting the impure aqueous solution with a substantially water-insoluble zirconium compound, e.g. zirconium hydroxide, zirconium dioxide, carbonated zirconium hydrate or zirconium silicate, whereby the impurities are adsorbed thereon, and separating the purified aqueous solution containing the Vitamin B12 from the zirconium compound and the impurities adsorbed thereon. During the adsorption the pH of the impure aqueous solution is maintained in the range of 5 to 9 and the temperature in the range 0 DEG to 75 DEG C. In the examples a fermentation liquor produced by S. aureofaciens is pretreated by adsorption on charcoal, the eluate from which is treated with ammonium sulphate to produce a precipitate which is dissolved in aqueous ethyl alcohol and subsequently contacted with the zirconium compound.
