Abstract

721,296. Treating liquids with gases. KITTEL, W. Feb. 27, 1952, [March 10, 1951.] No. 5194/52. Class 55 (2). The direction of the bubble cap outlets on the distributing plates e of a gas-liquid treatment column is arranged to produce a rotation of the liquid layer, the kinetic energy of the gas having a component tangential of the central axis and a radial inward component which opposes the centrifugal force acting on the liquid. Circular caps a are attached at one point to the gas riser so that some of the cap slots c are closed and the caps are so orientated that the main directional effect from each lies at a uniform angle with the tangent to a circle passing through the gas riser centres. Downcomers may be provided at different positions or for small diameter plates a single pipe l may deliver liquid from a peripheral point to the centre of the next lower plate. In modifications, slotted hexagonal or octagonal plates h supported on the plate by their bent downcorners are arranged round the gas risers b in place of the cap slots, and the caps are secured to ah overhead slotted baffle plate f effecting a cyclonic separation of liquid from the rising gas. Another construction replaces the plates h by a single slotted sheet, &c., made up in sections and extending over the risers but not the downcomers. The plates e, f, n, may be subdivided into equilateral triangles, squares, oblongs, &c., to facilitate the build-up. of plates of any diameter.
