Abstract
721,284. Liquid level gauge. YARNALLWARING CO. Dec. 21, 1951, [May 21, 1951], No. 30024/51. Class 123 (1). The liquid level in a gauge containing a liquid having dirt particles therein is illuminated by projecting upwardly at an angle of 35 degrees-60 degrees to the vertical on to the meniscus light of a wavelength which is not reflected by the dirt, i.e. light oi a wavelength of 540 to 400 millimicrons, i.e. in the blue-green range, which is not much reflected by rust. The light source is preferably intermittent to make the meniscus sparkle. A mercury arc 37 or an arc containing thallium, copper, lead, or potassiumis employed. The illuminator comprises a wedge-shaped casing 20 having a vertical slit 22 and a reflector 33, the arc lamp 37 being housed at the bottom. The slit 22 is defined by protruding lips 29, and the casing 20 is hooked onto the gauge at 30 to bring the slit 22 closely adjacent the slit in the conventional gauge. Light is internally reflected at the meniscus and emerged at the .other side of the gauge. Specifications 400,309 and 407,063 are referred to.
