Abstract

[Also in Division G2] An opacimeter comprises a funnel-shaped container 12 through which a constant-head test liquid flows and a covering chamber 9 having one or more selenium cells 10 located on its inner wall and a light-source e.g. filament lamp 1 arranged so as to project a light beam normal to the liquid surface. The zero reading on the meter 11 is arranged to correspond to substantially zero opacity, by painting the internal surfaces white, and by utilizing masks 7, 8, converging lens 2 and a reflecting surface 14 to ensure that only a well-defined beam enters and leaves the liquid so that the dispersion is effectively all due to the liquids opacity. The opacimeter may be dipped into a flowing stream in which case compressed air is pumped into it through the upper opening in tube 6 so as to prevent liquid penetration into the upper compartments of the meter and the lower end 15 of the container is left open.
