Defrost water is led from the storage compartment 2 of a refrigerator by a pike 7 into an evaporating receptacle 10 supported by a heating member in the machinery compartment 3 and the receptacle has a flexible bottom to ensure that it conforms to its supporting surface to give a good heat transfer rate. The receptacle may be wholly of flexible material or may comprise a flexible bottom attached to a rigid frame forming its side walls. The fuller the receptacle, the better the bottom conforms to the support and the greater is the heat transfer rate. The supporting member may be a plate 9 secured to an auxiliary coil condenser 6 or the receptacle may rest directly on the condenser 6.
