An evaporator for a compression refrigerating system comprises a shell 10 fed with liquid refrigerant by an upper pipe 26, the refrigerant flowing in series through vertically superposed chambers defined by plates 20 having staggered openings 31 formed with. liquid retaining lips 32, the plates being mounted between spacers 23 on a rod 22 threaded into the top of the shell 10. In a modification, the rod 22 is replaced bv a pipe passing through the shell and traversed by a secondary refrigerant.
