720,581. Making bags. ATELIERS DE CONSTRUCTIONS MECANIQUES C. & A. HOLWEG SOC. AR.L. Oct. 23, 1952, No. 26617/52. Class 94 (2). In a machine for making block-bottom bags the web 1 is fed from a roll 2, through rollers 4, 5, where gum is applied to a tube forming member 6, a rotary knife 7 having a flexible blade cooperating with a fixed knife 7<SP>1</SP> to make a semi-circular cut A in the upper wall of the bag tube. A narrow flexible blade 8 enters the tube which passes between rollers 9 and 10 to rotary knives 11 which make transverse and longitudinal cuts B through both walls of the tube. The blade 8 has its end raised in front of a rocking lever 12 to lift the flap formed in the upper wall of the tube. In this way the tube is opened and the bottom formed as at C by the member 12 co-operating with a bar 13, the bags remaining joined by a strip of material on the underside. A pair of rollers 15 on oscillating arms 14 are lowered successively to ensure overlapping of the two flattened parts. Endless belts 16 then advance the tube to a rotary knife 17 which cuts the connecting strip along a slightly curved line as at E, the tube being gripped on a rotary drum 18 by a member 20, while a rotarv blade 19 marks the fold line for the leading bottom flap, gum is applied and the flap is folded over by retractable members 21 on the drum 20. The tube passes under a rotary folding blade 22 which marks the second bottom flap which is flattened by a member 23<SP>1</SP> carried by endless chains 23 at a speed greater than the peripheral speed of the drum. A projection 22<SP>1</SP> on the support for the blade 22 co-operates with a notch 18<SP>1</SP> on the drum 18 to provide a slight amount of slack in the bag blank when the blade 22 comes into contact with the tube to prevent tearing. The finished bags are flattened by a roller 24 and ejected on to a table 25.
