Abstract

191,726. Fischer, E. Jan. 10, 1922, [Convention date]. Paper bags, making.-Relates to machines for printing and making paper bags of the type with broken-off corners. Paper is fed from a roll 2, Fig. 1, which is positively rotated, to form a loop 5 and passes between stretching-rollers 3, 4 and over a smooth cylinder 6 co-operating with a printing roller 7. The cylinder 6 is intermittently rotated from the main driving roller 36 by bevel gearing, and the roller 7 is lifted at intervals by a lever 17 and cam 18 but not sufficiently far to disengage it from an adjustable toothed sector driving it intermittently. Feeding rollers 19, 20 supply ink from a container 21. The paper passes between rollers 24, 25 the latter of which applies glue, and over a roller 26, at which point it may be reinforced by a second strip of paper &c. from a roll 28. The paper is formed into a tube over a plate 27, Fig. 2, and is fed forward by the roller 36 and rubber rollers 85 acting in recesses 34 in the plate. A knife 47 severs the tube a little in advance of the plate 27, and a blade 57 and a corresponding lower blade apply glue to the upper and lower sides of the end of the tube at the moment of severance. The blade is actuated by a rod 63 and a system of links 59, 61, 65. A flexible blade 74 on the plate 27 causes the end of the paper tube to gape and a folder having a hose 66 and a heel 67 enters the end of the tube and folds it back into the position shown in Fig. 8, the end a<1>, b<1>, c<1>, d' of the plate defining the folds a, b, c, d. Members 75, 76, Fig. 9, advance' and press upon the partially folded bottom of the bag to define the tabs b, g, f, and c, h, e, and a slide 77 makes a fold along the line e, f. The rollers 35, 36 then feed the bag on to an endless band 78, Fig. 1, and against stops 79, Fig. 2, and rollers 80, 80<1> fold down the tabs b, g, f and c, h, e to complete the bottom of the bag as shown in Fig. 7. Rollers 88, 89 flatten the completed bags and feed them on to a table 92 where they may be bundled.
