This invention is concerned with a machine for producing folded boxes each having an inner lining bag and a reinforcing collar in the lining bag which serves primarily as a guide for the top of the folded box which is in the form of a hinged snap cover.
The primary object of the invention is to provide in a machine of this kind furnished with a mandrel wheel an apparatus which enables the aforesaid reinforcing collars to be fed to the machine and fastened inside the lining bags without impairing the output of the machine.
Broadly considered the machine of the present invention comprises, in combination, at least one forming mandrel, apparatus for feeding to the forming mandrel from a supply roll a web of packaging material, apparatus for feeding toward the path of feed of the web of packaging material from a supply roll a web of stiff material, the width of which is equal to the length of a reinforcing collar, a cutting device arranged along the path of feed of the web of stiff material and adjacent the path of feed of the web of packaging material for severing reinforcing collar strips from this web, a fastening device arranged along the path of feed of the web of packaging material for fastening the reinforcing collar strips to this web at regular distances from one another, a cutting device arranged along the path of feed of the web of packaging material after the lastrnentioned device for dividing this web into individual lining bag blanks, each with a reinforcing collar strip thereon, and a folding tool associated with the forming mandrel for folding the lining bag blanks around the mandrel.
A preferred embodiment of machine according to the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
In these drawings:
FIGURE 1 is a side view of the machine,
FIGURE 2 is a plan view of the machine,
FIGURE 3 is a diagrammatic illustration of a package produced by the machine,
FIGURE 4 shows the device for forming the lining bag of the package at the beginning of its working stroke, and
FIGURE 5 shows this device at the end of its working stroke.
In the machine illustrated in the drawings, folded boxes S of the construction shown in FIGURE 3 having lining bags F are produced in the known way on the forming mandrels 1 of an intermittently rotatable mandrel wheel 2. The packaging material for the lining bags F is heat scalable and is drawn from a supply roll 4 in the form of a web 3, being cut into appropriate lengths by a cutting device 5, 6 and these then being fed to one of the stations of the mandrel wheel 2 for the formation of the lining bags. The packaging material for the folded boxes S is fed to a further station of the wheel in the form of stamped-out cardboard blanks Z and these blanks are there folded around the formed lining bags F.
The web 3 is drawn over a floating diverting roller 7, between a pair of draw rollers 8, 9, over a floating roller 10 and a diverting roller 11 and then through a pair of intermittently rotatable draw rollers 12, 13. The pair of draw rollers 8, 9 are driven by a sprocket 59 through a chain 40 from a sprocket 39 secured on the main driving shaft 38 of the machine. The intermittent drive of the pair of draw rollers 12, 13 is performed by a crank mechanism 42 the stroke of which is adjustable, this crank mechanism being connected through a sprocket 41 and the chain 40 to the support 39 on the driving shaft 38. A toothed segment 43 connected to the crank mechanism 42 meshes with a gear wheel 44 which is rigidly connected to a free wheel 45. This free wheel is, in turn, connected through gear wheels 46 and 47 to the draw roller 13.
Arranged in the plane of the horizontal feed of the web 3 and between the diverting roller 11 and the pair of draw rollers 12, 13 is a fastening device which functions to fasten strips 18 of cardboard to the web 3 at specific distances from one another. This device comprises two stationary sealing members 14, 15 arranged below the aforesaid plane and a periodically operable die 16 which is arranged above this plane and is movable vertically with respect to these sealing members. The sealing members 14, 15 each has on its upper surface a resistance strip 17 for impulse scaling. Furthermore, these scaling members 14, 15 are arranged at such a spacing from one another that each cardboard strip 18 placed on and tacked to the web 3 is only heat sealed at its margins to the web 3.
The cardboard strips 18 are severed from a web 19 of cardboard drawn from a supply roll 20. For this purpose, there are provided a pair of draw rollers 21, 22 of which the diameters are such that, in each working stroke, they advance the web 19 through a distance which is equal to the length of one cardboard strip 18, and a periodically operable cutting device 23, 24. The draw roller 22 is driven by a sprocket 60 through the chain 40 from the main driving shaft. During a cutting operation, the web 19 is pressed against the counter knife 24 of this device by a holding die 25 which is operable simultaneously with the cutting knife 23, and is thereby held in this position. As a result of the continual advance of the web 19, a loop is periodically formed in this web, but the latter is straightened out immediately the holding die 25 is raised. The cutting knife 23 is secured to a yoke 48 which is movable up and down by means of a rocking lever 49 actuated by a cam 50. This cam 50 is driven through a sprocket 51 by the chain 40. Also secured to the yoke 48 are the holding die 25 and the pressing dies 27 and 16 of a tacking device (to be described in detail below) and the fastening device respectively.
The cutting device 23, 24 is so arranged relatively to the path of feed of the web 3 that the cardboard strips 18 severed from the web 19 are correctly placed on the web 3. The distance of the cutting device 23, 24 from the end face of the mandrel which is aligned with the web 3, is equal to the total length of a plurality of blanks.
To prevent each cardboard strip 18 from slipping on the web 3 there is provided behind the diverting roller 11 and in the path of movement of the web 3 a tacking device. This device comprises a stationary sealing member 26, preferably impulse heated, and a pressing die 27 which is movable periodically relatively to the sealing member. During lowering of the cutting knife 23, the die 27 presses the cardboard strip 18 concerned against the web 3 and the sealing member 26 so that the strip 18 is tacked to the web 3 by heating impulses before it is completely secured to the web by the succeeding sealing members 14, 15 and the die 16. The web 3 with the cardboard strip 18 secured thereto is then fed to one of 3 the forming mandrels 1 of the mandrel wheel 2 so that the rear edge of the strip 18 extending transversely across the web 3 comes into a position fiush with the end face of this forming mandrel. Accordingly, when the blank for the lining bag F, severed from the web 3 by the cutting device 5, 6, is folded around the mandrel 1, the cardboard strip 18 forms a stiff, U-shaped collar K for the comparatively limp lining bag F. Folding of the blank around the mandrel 1 is performed in the known way by means of a folding tool 61. To this end, the folding tool 61 is movable up and down through its rod 62 by a linkage 64 having a roller 66 running in a groove in a cam plate 65. Arranged in the folding tool 61 is a die 63 which, when the tool 61 is raised, resiliently presses the blank concerned against the underside of the folding mandrel 1 under the action of a spring 67, whilst the folding tool 61 itself folds the two side parts of the blank up against the mandrel.
The longitudinal seam of the lining bag F is produced by two sealing tools 52, 53 mounted in pincer fashion. These sealing tools 52, 53 are operated through a link age '55 from a cam 54 connected to a sprocket 56 which is connected through a chain 57 to a sprocket 58 on the main driving shaft 38 of the machine.
The lining bag F is closed at the end containing the collar K in the known way by a top closure having two triangular corner folds 28 so that, when a hinged, snap cover 29 provided on the folded box S and formed by incisions 30, 31, 32 in the cardboard blank Z is opened, one of the corner folds 28 is freed.
The outer end of each forming mandrel 1 is rebated at 33, 34 and 35 on its underside and on the two adjoining sides. These rebates correspond in width and depth to a cardboard strip 18 so that the latter can be accommodated therein when folded on the mandrel.
In addition, there is provided in advance of the pair of draw rollers 21, 22 a grooving tool comprising two grooving plates 36 and a counter roller 37 for grooving the strips 18 at the zones of the folds intended to be formed on the forming mandrels 1.
If desired, the cardboard strips 18 may be fastened to the web 3 by means of any suitable adhesive. In this case, a known adhesive-applying device may be provided in place of the sealing device on the path of feed of the web at a position in front of the point where the strips are fed in.
