Abstract

494,040. Making paper &c. bags. WOODS, H. J., THRISSELL ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., CHAPMAN, D. G., and CHAPMAN & CO. (BALHAM), Ltd. July 2, 1937, No. 18448. [Class 94 (ii)] In a machine for making flat bags provided with a flap at each end, Fig. 7, in which the bag blank flaps are outlined in a moving web 8 by a line or lines of perforations &c., following which the web is formed into a tube and the leading tubular blanks are torn therefrom, one or both flaps are trimmed, at 45, 47, by co-operating elements moving at the speed of the flap or flaps. The web 8 of paper &c. is printed or embossed at 14 and adhesive is applied to a longitudinal edge at 15. Rollers 16, 17 now perforate the web at 21, 22, 23, 24, 20, to provide a closure flap 18 and a bottom flap 19 for adjacent bag blanks, and further lines of perforations 27, 28, 29, 30 along which the tubular blank is subsequently torn. At 11 the perforated web is formed into a tube and faster running rolls 36, 37 &c. separate off the leading tubular blank. Retractable pins 40 on the roll 36 remove the waste portions 31, 32, and deliver them to any suitable receptacle, as rollers 38, 39 moving faster still accelerate the separated blank forwardly. At 41, 42 the flaps 18, 19 are trimmed by shaped cutting elements, the waste material 45, 47 being removed by pins 46, 48. Rolls 51, 52 fold the bottom flap and the bag is completed by any suitable means. The leading flap of the tubular perforated web may be trimmed before the separation of the tubular blank.
