Abstract
720,339. Direct connections between conductors. HUGHES & CO., Ltd., F. A. July 30, 1953 [Aug. 5, 1952], No. 19677/52. Class 38 (1). An anti-corrosion connection between a stranded cable 17 and a carbon block 15 forming the anode for a cathodic protection system, is made by threading the cable through an apertured elastic disc 19 which fits into the end of a rubber sleeve 18 and then soldering the cable conductors 16 to a tinned copper strip 20 provided round the device 18, 19. The device is then inserted with a close fit in a recess in the block 15 and the sleeve 18 and strip 20 pressed into good contact with the walls of the recess by chuck members 23 urged outwardly by a screw 24 pre-threaded over the cable 16. The remainder of the recess is filled with graphite or bitumen 27. In another embodiment (Fig. 9) the chuck and screw are replaced by a plug 29 of slightly greater diameter than the normal inside diameter of the sleeve 28. More than one strip 20 may be used or one integral cup-shaped member may replace the strips. The disc 19 may be integral with the sleeve 18, and the device 18, 19 may be made of electrically-conducting elastic material.
