Abstract
720,314. Percussive drills. AKTIEBOLAGET ATLAS DIESEL. March 26, 1952 [March 30, 1951], No. 7769/52. Class 124. A piston for a fluid operated percussive drill has a shank for delivering blows to an anvil or a tool and a head which is at least 50 per cent larger in diameter than the shank, the piston having a recess or cavity and being so constructed that the weight of any section of a given length along at least 90 per cent of the length of the piston differs at the most 25 per cent from the mean value of all sections of the same length. As shown, the piston comprises a shank 16 joined by a conical portion 18 to a larger diameter cylindrical head 17 with a cavity 25, the thickness of metal in the various parts being such that the weight of each section a is substantially the same. The piston top may be open as shown in which case the back head of the drill has a portion which fits into the aperture, or a cover may be fitted on the piston head, Fig. 3 (not shown). The shank may be provided with grooves for rotating the tool, and the piston may have a passage 19 for the supply of cleaning fluid.
