[Also in Group VII] A machine for forming or shaping a shoe upper part, such as the heel end, comprises a bottom plate 36 bolted to a table T and carrying a pedestal 38, in the rounded top 40 of which is supported an operating shaft 41 (not shown) which may be coupled, by the operation of a treadle 74, through a clutch collar and dog, to a pulley 57 connected to a driving motor, to cause a crank head 93, upon which one of a pair of complementary die elements is mounted, to be reciprocated. The other die element is supported on a block 51 on the bottom plate 36 and both elements are preferably heated, The arrangement is such that on initial depression of the treadle 74, one end of an arm 100 connected to a pin 95 is moved downwards against springs 94 to cause pressure to be applied to the crank head. In one modification described, the head may be initially lowered to align and heat the work by depression of a second treadle 104, or this operation may, in a second modification described, be performed by a preliminary depression of a single treadle, a further depression of which may actuate the clutch to apply pressure to the work as indicated above.
