Abstract
A fuel oil has incorporated therein at least 0.001 per cent. of an oil-soluble copolymer derived from an acrylic or an alpha-substituted acrylic ester of a saturated aliphatic alcohol containing at least 8 carbon atoms in the molecule, and an ethylenically unsaturated compound containing a basic tertiary amino group. Copolymer components specified are the n-octyl, 2-ethyl hexyl, n-decyl, 2-butyl octyl, lauryl, tridecyl, cetyl, octadecyl, and "Lorol" (Registered Trade Mark) acrylates and lower alkyl substituted acrylates, and as basic tertiary amino compounds 2-vinyl pyridine, 4-vinyl pyridine, 2-methyl-5-vinyl pyridine, 2-ethyl-5-vinyl pyridine, 4-(beta-methacrylyloxyethyl) morpholine, p-dimethylaminomethylstyrene, p-dimethylamino ethylstyrene, and the dimethylaminoethyl, diethylamino ethyl, diisopropylaminoethyl, di-n-butylamino) ethyl, di-(n-butylamino) propyl, dicyclohexylaminoethyl, and (1-piperidyl) ethyl acrylates and alpha-hydrocarbon substituted acrylates. Also present in the copolymers as third components may be N-hydrocarbon substituted acrylamides and alpha-substituted acrylamides such as the N-hexyl, N-decyl, N-tetradecyl, N-octadecyl, N-cyclohexyl, N-phenyl, N-p-tolyl, N-o-tolyl, and N-naphthyl acrylamides and methacrylamides. The compositions may also contain di-(2-hydroxybenzal)-1, 2-propylenediamine as a metal deactivator. The preparation of the copolymers by bulk or mineral oil solution methods is described, employing benzoyl peroxide or alpha, alpha1-azodiisobutyronitrile as catalysts.ALSO:A fuel oil has incorporated therein at least 0.001 per cent. of an oil-soluble copolymer derived from an acrylic or an alpha-substituted acrylic ester of a saturated aliphatic alcohol containing at least 8 carbon atoms in the molecule, and an ethylenically unsaturated compound containing a basic tertiary amino group. Also present in the copolymers as third components may be N-hydrocarbon substituted acrylamides and alpha-substituted acrylamides, such as the N-hexyl, N-decyl, N-tetradecyl, N-octadecyl, N-cyclohexyl, N-phenyl, N-o-tolyl, N-p-tolyl and N-naphthyl acrylamides and methacrylamides. The compositions may also contain di-(2-hydroxbenzal) -1, 2-propylenediamine as a metal deactivator.
