Abstract

The catalytic conversion of aqueous impure solutions of maleic acid is effected by heating in the presence of chlorine. The solutions employed are those obtained as by-products in the production of maleic anhydride by the catalytic oxidation of hydrocarbons, e.g. benzene and in the production of phthalic anhydride by the oxidation of naphthalene. Hydrochloric acid is the preferred catalyst but iodine, bromine, hydrochloric, hydrobromic and sulphuric acids, potassium thiocyanate and sodium bromide are mentioned. The reaction mixture should contain 2 to 6 mols. of water per mol. of maleic acid and 0.05 to 0.08 mol. of hydrogen chloride per mol. of water. Based on the weight of maleic acid, 1 to 3 per cent of chlorine is passed into the mixture at elevated temperature, when the fumaric acid is precipitated. In order to obtain white crystals of fumaric acid, the crude aqueous maleic acid is heated with chlorine and activated carbon during the preliminary step of concentration and the passage of chlorine continued during the isomerization at reflux temperature. Examples are given.
