Abstract
719,413. Vehicle collision - guards. CLAVEAU, E. April 4,1952 [April 7, 1951], No. 8746/52. Class 103(2) A fender for a vehicle comprises a rigid member fixed in a recessed part of the vehicle body and an outer member wholly or partly. pneumatic, which is fitted with an inflation valve and is permanently or detachedly fixed to the rigid member, the external surface of the pneumatic member tangentially extending the outer surface of the body of the vehicle. The fender shown in Figs. 1 and 4 comprises a rubber cover 41 and a cross-beam 44 which enclose an inner air tube 53 fitted with a valve 54. The air tube thins out at its ends where it is surrounded by, the ends of the cover 41 which are doubled back and secured to the ribs 42, 43 of the cover. In a modification. the air tube 53 is dispensed with, the member 41 being united by vulcanization to an inner rubber member fitted with an inflation valve. Vertical reinforcing ribs of rubberized fabric or of textile fabric or metal gauze reinforced if desired by metal wires, may be cemented inside the outer member. In the construction shown in Fig. 7, pneumatic half-fenders 82, 83 are connected to a cross-beam 84 and are provided with guards 86 connected by straight or curved metal or rubber members 87. Fig. 10 shows a construction comprising two pneumatic half-fenders, one half having a tyre cover 105 bent and cemented to an inner member 105a, the other half having a tyre cover 106 secured to the member 105a by a plug 108. Both halves are secured together by a fish-plate 109 provided with a pin 110 screw-threaded to enable the fish-plate to be detachedly connected to a metallic band 44 cemented to the member 105a. In the construction shown in Fig. 9, the fender comprises a tyre cover 41, a mass 53a, of elastic cellular material containing gas bubbles, and a compressed air tube 53 secured to a cross-beam 71.
