855,729. Pneumatic tyres. PNEUMATIQUES & CAOUTCHOUC MANUFACTURE KLEBER-COLOMBES. March 18, 1957 [March 17, 1956], No. 8824/57. Class 144 (2). A pneumatic tyre comprises a carcase of an even number of symmetrically cross-laid plies 6, 7 of bias-cut parallel cord fabric, and a crown reinforcement of an even number of cross-laid parallel cord plies 3, 4 having the same cord angles as the carcase plies, the crown ply cords being substantially inextensible and being substantially in side by side contact within their plies. Such a tyre is made by building into the flat-band tyre blank crown plies having spaced cords 9, Fig. 6, calendered between rubber coatings 10, 11 which strike through between the cords, the plies having an initial cord angle (with respect to the circumferential direction) greater than that desired in the finished tyre. On shaping of the fland band, the cords in the crown plies are crowded together, Fig. 7, and possibly imbricated, whilst retaining a rubber film therebetween, and the cord angle is decreased. The crown ply cords may be of metal, glass, or natural or synthetic textile material.
