Abstract

The invention comprises a water-soluble Vitamin E-active polyethylene glycol ester of a tocopherol acid ester and the preparation thereof by standard esterification techniques. As tocopherol acid esters there may be used esters of a , b , g and d -tocopherols and the corresponding hydroquinones with succinic citraconic, itaconic, maleic, glutaconic and phthalic acids. The polyethylene glycol employed desirably has a molecular weight between 400 and 6000 with molecular weights in the range of 600 to 1500 being preferred. The esterification of the tocopherol acid ester with the polyethylene glycol may be effected in toluene, ethylene dichloride, benzene, naphtha or similar solvents in the presence of an esterification catalyst such as p-toluenesulphonic acid, oxalic acid, hydrochloric acid, or trichloracetic acid.
