Abstract

535,475. Maleic and fumaric acid esters. TRIGGS, W. W. (Rohm & Haas Co.). Oct. 6, 1939, No. 27366. [Class 2 (iii)] Acid esters of maleic or fumaric acid and methallyl alcohol or its homologues are prepared by known methods of esterification. 'The acid esters may be polymerized, alone or in admixture with other polymerizable organic compounds, to yield insoluble infusible resins. In examples (1) methallyl alcohol is esterified with maleic anhydride to yield an ester that polymerizes on standing ; (2) methallyl acid maleate is polymerized in the presence of benzoyl peroxide which may be dissolved in ethylene dichloride ; (4) methallyl alcohol is esterified with maleic anhydride in the presence of methyl acrylate and the product polymerized in the presence of methyl acrylate, benzoyl peroxide, and ethylene dichloride ; (5) methallyl and maleate and styrene are polymerized in the presence of benzene and benzoyl peroxide; (6) methallyl acid maleate, methyl acrylate and ethyl methacrylate are polymerized in the presence of ethylene dichloride and benzoyl peroxide; (7) an emulsion of methyl methacrylate, methallyl acid maleate and benzoyl peroxide in aqueous ammonium polyacrylate is polymerized. The polymers, which are polybasic acids, may be converted into salts or esters, such as alkyd resins. The polymerization may be effected in situ on materials such as paper, wood or fabrics.
