A self loading transporting device of the kind in which slide members movable towards and away from each other by hydraulic means are capable of having secured to them load engaging members; has a loading bucket separate parts of which, instead of said load engaging members, are secured to the slide members, movement of the slide members serving to open or close the bucket. A squeeze clamp mounted on the lifting carriage i of a fork lift truck having a tiltable mast 2 is modified to form a pair of opening doors at the base of a loading shovel also mounted on the lifting carriage. The normal hydraulically actuated clamp jaws are replaced by a pair of L-shaped plates 15, 16, braced by brackets 17, 18 and struts 19, the horizontal portions of plates 15, 16 when in their closed position constituting the base .of an open fronted bucket which comprises a pair of side plates 11, a rear plate 11a, a pair of carriage engaging lugs 12, 13 and a front lip 14 having a channel 23 in which the members 15, 16 slide. This lip is braced to the rear plate 11a by struts 21, 22, which, when the plates 15, 16 are closed, are supported on the struts 19; pins (not shown) being provided on the struts 19 to engage holes in the plates i 1 and so increase the rigidity of the bucket. The clamp actuating mechanism comprises a pair of hydraulically inter-connected rams 3, 5 as described in Specification 709,427. The Specification states that the apparatus may be mounted on a truck, tractor or endless track or track laying vehicle.
