Abstract
601,288. Loading vehicles. DEMPSTER BROS., Inc. Nov. 20, 1945, No. 31241. Convention date, Feb. 19. [Class 78 (iv)] Apparatus for loading skips on vehicles comprises a base frame including fore-and-aft extending tracks 14 on which is mounted a carriage 15 which may be moved forwardly and rearwardly by mechanism 20, skid frames 35 mounted on the carriage having extension skid frames 48 which are lifted and lowered with respect to the skid frame 35 by mechanism 47, and means for raising and lowering a load with respect to the skid frames. Pivoted at 22 on an anchor plate 23 fixed to the forward end of the base frame is a boom structure 24 consisting of a pair of arms extending rearwardly of the chassis and spaced so that when in the lowered position the arms embrace the carriage 15. The rearward extremities of the boom arms are provided with pins 26 from which chains depend for attachment to the skips. The boom is operated by hydraulic means 30 pivoted at 29 to trapezoidal-shaped members 27 on the arms. Mounted on the carriage 15 and supported by uprights 39 is the upwardly and forwardly inclined skid frame 35 of channel-shaped crosssection each channel having its rear face provided with a wear plate 36 on which the skip is designed to slide. Welded in the inner corners of each channel 35 and extending the full length are bars 37 spaced to form a trackway 38 for the extension skid frame 48 comprising a pair of inwardly facing channel bars 49 to the upper ends of which is attached a transverse member 50. A single bail guide 54 projects downwardly from the member 50 and lies between two bail guides 41 carried by the carriage 15. A piston-rod 57 of the hydraulic mechanism 47 is secured in a recess 56 in a block 55 projecting forwardly from the member 50 and lifts and lowers the extension skid frame 48 with respect to the skid frame 35. Runners 52 are secured to the outer faces of the channel bars 49 and slide in the tracks 38. A wear plate 53 is attached to each of the bars 49. The hydraulic mechanism 20, 30, 47 are operated from the cab 11. When the skip is to be loaded on to the truck, the hydraulic mechanism 30 moves the boom structure 24 around the pivot 22 to raise the skip from the ground. The skip first engages an apron 64 and is then guided by the wear surfaces 35 and 53. The carriage 15 is then moved from its rearmost to its foremost position by the hydraulic mechanism 20 where it is in vertical alignment with rests 65. The hydraulic mechanism 30 is then lowered to deposit the load on the rests 65. The extension frame 48 may be lowered if the loaded truck is passing through a doorway. To unload the truck, the extension frame is raised, the carriage 15 is moved to the rearmost position and the load lifted from the rests by the hydraulic mechanism 30 until the bail of the skip is engaged with an automatic hook 60 mounted on the member 50, and the boom is then lowered. If the skip is provided with a pivoted bail it is guided on the guide members 41, 54 during the raising and lowering of the boom. U.S.A. Specifications 2,281,183 and 2,305,148 are referred to.
