Abstract

A liquid biocidal preparation comprises a urea derivative having the formula <FORM:0718877/VI/1> where X is a halogenated acyl group, which may also contain one or other substituents; Y is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, aryl, aralkyl or acyl group any of which may also contain one or more substituents; R1 and R2 are hydrogen atoms or alkyl, aryl or aralkyl groups any of which may also contain one or more substituents; a sticker (defined) and an aqueous medium. Preferred urea derivatives are those in which R1 and R2 are hydrogen and (a) X and Y are both acyl of formula <FORM:0718877/VI/2> where Z is alkyl of 1 to 3, C atoms and in the case of X where Z is substituted by one, two or three chlorine atoms or (b) X is as in (a) and Y is alkyl of 1 to four C atoms, no other substituents being present. Substituents which may be present are -NO2, -SO3H, -OH or -NH2 groups. The ureas may be used in the form of salts. Specified ureas are chloroacetyl urea; N-chloroacetyl N1-phenyl urea; N-chloroacetyl N1isopropyl urea; N, N1-dichloroacetyl urea; trichloroacetylurea; and N-w-chlorovaleroyl urea. The compositions contain 0.01 to 1.0, and preferably 0.01 to 0.5, per cent of the active urea and 10 to 500, and preferably 20 to 100, per cent, based on the urea, of the sticker. Specified stickers are gelatin, dextrin, agar agar, sodium alginate, tragacanth, acacia and mixtures of a heavy mineral oil (viscosity 1500cs at 20 DEG C) and a light mineral oil (boiling range 150-200 DEG C). Optional additions are (a) dispersing agents such as alkyl sulphate, alkyl aryl sulphonates, sulphosuccinates, soaps and polyethylene oxide derivatives of alkylated phenols; (b) other pesticides (c) plant nutritives and plant hormones.
