Abstract

An aqueous emulsion of a synthetic rubber is made from 5 to 15 parts of a vinyl pyridine and 85 to 95 parts of a mixture of butadiene-1, 3 and 2,3-dialkylbutadiene-1,3, the latter being 5 to 50 per cent. of the diene mixture. The vinyl pyridine may be 2-vinyl, 3-vinyl, 4-vinyl, 2-methyl-5-vinyl, 5-ethyl-2-vinyl, 2, 4-dimethyl-6-vinyl or 2,4-diethyl-6-vinyl pyridine. The dialkylbutadiene may be 2, 3-dimethyl-, 2-methyl-3-ethyl- or 2-methyl-3-butyl-butadiene-1,3. Conventional polymerization methods are used. In the example the emulsifying agent is a fatty acid soap, the catalyst is cumene or diisopropyl benzene hydroperoxide, the activator is tetraethylene pentamine, the stabilizer is the sodium salt of a naphthalene sulphonic acid-formaldehyde condensate, and the modifier is a mixture of dodecyl, tetradecyl and hexadecyl mercaptans. The second order transition temperature of the terpolymer is -74 DEG C. The terpolymers may be vulcanized to give products having improved low-temperature flexibility and resilience.
