Abstract

<PICT:0718715/IV (a)/1> Polyethylene is treated to make it receptive to printing inks by directing a flame across its surface for a short time which is insufficient to cause distortion of the material. In one form of apparatus for carrying out the treatment, the polyethylene 27 passes over a continuously rotating roller 23 and is subjected to the action of a flame from a pipe 24. The roller 23 dips into a vessel 25 containing water or other cooling liquid, a film of which is formed on the roller and prevents air pockets underneath the polyethylene where it passes over the roller, in addition to cooling its underside. The peripheral speed of the roller 23 may be slightly greater than that of the material 27. A blade 35 removes any water adhering to the polyethylene, prior to the material passing over a vacuum drying roller 31 and thence to a winding drum 33. The treatment may be applied to the surface of polyethylene-coated electric cable or the surface of bottles or containers made of polyethylene.
