Abstract
<PICT:0813885/III/1> Unsaturated oils, such as linseed, castor, safflower, tung or fish oil, are oxidatively polymerized ("blown") by a process in which a film is drawn from the surface of a pool of oil contained in a reactor by means of one or more revolving bodies which dip into the liquid, such as a drum, the film then being exposed to air or other oxygen-containing gas. As shown, a suitable apparatus comprises a trough 1 containing heating or cooling means and a drum 3 dipping into oil contained in the trough, the drum being rotated by means of axle 4 connected to belt-driven pulley 10. The upper part of the drum is enclosed by a hood 6 through which pass oblong nozzles 7 connected by pipes 8 to an air supply, whereby air is blown on to and over the surface of the oil film carried on the surface of the drum when the drum is rotated. As desired, the air may be heated or cooled before use. Scraper blade 9 removes excess liquid, and another blade (not shown) may be provided to strip the treated film of oil from the drum. If desired, two or more reactors may be used in cascade in order that different conditions may be applied during different stages of the process. For example, the first stage may be confined to peroxidation in the absence of catalyst, while polymerization, preferably in the presence of a catalyst, is left to subsequent stages.
