718,645. Toothed gearing; reversing gearing; coupling gear wheels. CHANTIERS NAVALS DE LA CIOTAT, and VINCENT, M. May 14, 1952 [May 16, 1951], No. 12217/52. Classes 80 (1) and 80 (2) In epicyclic reduction gearing, particularly for marine propellers, and employing spur or helical teeth, the driven shaft 5 is fixed to. an annulus 12 and the driving shaft 1 is geared to a cage 3 carrying a number of stepped planet pairs 6, 7 which engage respectively a stationary reaction annulus 10 and the driven annulus 12, and the pinions 6, 7 are resiliently interconnected to equalize tooth pressures by means of torsion rods 9, each pinion 6 being rotatably mounted on the extended hub of the pinion 7. In order to provide for reverse propulsion, each stepped planet unit may comprise three pinions engaging three annuli-a driven annulus, a larger reaction annulus, and a smaller reaction annulus-the direction of rotation depending on which reaction annulus is held stationary. The annuli may be braked to effect a reversal. The torque transmitted may be measured by employing a hydraulic ram to prevent rotation of the reaction annulus and measuring the hydraulic pressure. For diesel engines the driving shaft may be directly connected to the cage 3, omitting the gearing 2.
