Abstract
A process of bleaching cellulosic fibrous material comprises uniformly steeping the material in an aqueous solution of an alkali or alkaline-earth metal chlorite at a pH of 7.0 or above and, after freeing the material from excess chlorite solution, drying without an intermediate washing step. The bleaching bath may be a solution of sodium chlorite at a pH which is adjusted with acetic or formic acid to between 8.0 and 9.5 and may contain sodium bicarbonate, a sulphonated fatty compound, a fatty acid condensation product or a fatty alcohol sulphonate. Prior to bleaching the material may be cleaned. The material may be dried at 80 DEG to 95 DEG C. in a chamber into which hot air is blown. In examples regenerated cellulose staple fibre fleece, sliver and filaments are bleached and the temperature of the bleaching bath is between 20 DEG and 25 DEG C. or 50 DEG and 60 DEG C.
