Abstract

718,436. Endless belt conveyers. TULLIS, Ltd., D. & J. Dec. 29, 1952, [Oct. 19, 1951.] No. 24421/51. Class 78 (1). An endless belt circulating in contact with a plurality of rollers is prevented from creeping laterally by an independently rotatable member associated with at least one of the rollers and engageable by the adjacent margin of the belt when the latter suffers lateral displacement, at least one other of the rollers being adapted to be displaced by a fluid pressure motor supplied with fluid through a valve operated by rotation of the rotatable member on engagement by the belt, so as to bring about lateral re-adjustment of the belt. As shown, the endless belt 3 passes around a reversing roller 8 coaxial with and at one end of which is a conical roller 16 which is engaged by the adjacent marginal edge of the belt when laterally displaced. Upon such engagement roller 16 rotates and winds in a cable 17 which operates a valve 18 supplying air under pressure to a cylinder 20, which through linkage 26, 28, 30 and 31 shifts one bearing 29 of a roller 9 which engages the belt, so as to position it obliquely to the belt whereby the belt is caused to move laterally in the opposite direction back to its normal position. When roller 16 is no longer engaged by the belt a spring unwinds the cable 17 re-setting the valve 18 so as to exhaust cylinder 20 and allow bearing 29 to return to normal position under the influence of a weight 33. Restricting valve means is incorporated in the air supply system to and from the cylinder 20 to render the movements of bearing 29 gradual. A similar arrangement may be provided for re-adjusting the belt upon creepage to the other end of roller 8, but preferably roller 9 is so adjusted that in the normal position of bearing 29 the belt tends to creep only towards the end provided with the conical roller 16. As applied to an ironing machine, the belts 3; 4 which run together for the conveyance of articles therebetween are both provided with the described arrangement, a conical roller associated with the corresponding roller 14 around which belt 4 passes being located at the opposite side to that of the roller 8 so that the creep to be corrected occurs in opposite lateral directions, the correcting roller 9 and the corresponding roller for belt 4 (not shown) being displaced in opposite angular directions by shifting that bearing. of the latter roller which is on the opposite side to the bearing 29 of roller 9.
