Application filed July 2,
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, REUBEN. Hirorioooii, a citizen of the United States, residing. at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga. and State of Ohio, have. invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Delivery Tables, of whichthe following is a specification.
My invention relates to iIHPI'OVGlHQDtS in sheet delivery tables and hasfor its object the provision of. means for driving thediage onally positioned rolls thereof more. effectively than is obtainable with driving mechanism in use at the present time.
A difficulty commonly encountered with the driving mechanism of the prior art has resided in the displacement of the underrunning belt commonly employed for this purpose. lVith the diagonally positioned rolls of different lengths, which are used in sheet delivery tables, there is arecognized tendency of the belt, which also must drive in a diagonal position, but at right angles with the rolls, to slip out of proper position with respect to its driving pulley and thereby seriously wear the edges of the belt. This tendency has been attributed to the diiticulty of maintaining accurately aligned bearings for the rollers and, possibly, the. different drag which these rollers of different lengths impart to the belt.
Accordingly, it has been my purpose to produce a driving mechanism which shall avoid the difliculty above referredto and improve the efficiency of the drive. For this purpose I have associated with the driving belt and its adjacent mechanism suitably coacting paired rollers which shall engage the belt closely adjacent to its driving pulley and beyond the tightening device or adjustment, whereby said belt is caused to ride into its proper position upon the pulley. Furtl'ier features of construction and operalion may best be explained by making reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:
Fig. 1 is a plan view, partially broken away, of a sheet delivery table;
Fig. 2 is a similar detached view of the driving mechanism therefor embodying my invention Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional viewthereof, partially diagrammatic in character;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged transverse View of 1923; Serial No. 649,100.
the guiding rolls for theibclt', on line 4-.41,
Throughout the several figures of the drawings I have employed the same cliaracter of reLterence to indicate. similar par-ts.
' Referring first to Fig. 1, the essentials of the well-known type of delivery table are shown, comprisingthe diagonally positioned rolls a of varying length journaled within the irregular supporting frame a; These rolls are driven by a diagonally extending belt 5 under-running said rolls and pressed against the same by flanged idlers 0 normally interposed between each pair of rolls, as best shown in Fig. 3. The driving pulley d Is actuated by the bevel gears e e positioned at one corner of the frame. It will be understood that the lower length of the belt I) is travelling from left to right, and pivoted adjustment f, controllable by the screw mechanism g, is disposed approximately mid way oi its length, for tightening the beltas required; Beyond this adjustment, and closely adjacent to the driving pulley (Z, there are positioned two grooved idlers 2, best shown in Figs. 2 and 4, between which the belt loosely runs; but said idlers are properly spaced so that they will center the belt upon the driving pulley and thereby cause it to assume the proper position in its travel over the flanged idlers c, as best shown in Fig.2.
'lVith the belt properly adjusted by the pivoted member f and its screw-acting means, all tendency of said belt to ride upon one or the other of the lateral sets of flanges upon-the idlers 0 is effectively avoided, so
that the stretching of one edge or the otherof the belt, .and its wear or abrasion, are positively overcome.
The construction shown inFigs. 5 and 6 upon a somewhat larger scale embodies the same principles; the adjustment being one that is adapted for useupo-n certain types of delivery table, whereby one may apply my present invention without furthermodification. In this particular construction the idlers i are mounted upon angularly extendisaiaza Nr FF'ICE,
iug arms i, supported within the yoke j, bolted to the frame j of the driving mechanism. Said idlers are shown positioned a little moroclosely to the driving pulley d than in the preceeding figures.
Fig. 7 illustrates another slight modification wherein an ungrooved roller 2 is mounted near the end of the arm 2" and serves the same purpose of positioning and guiding the edges of the driving belt, not shown in this figure.
It will be appreciated idlers or. rollers i, interposed between the belt adjustment, and its driving pulley closely adjacent to the latter, that even with a relatively slack-belt, which is desirable for flexing it into position against the under side of the rolls a, said belt will run true throughout its upper length despite the numerous flexures necessary to. insure eflicient driving of the rolls (2-. Moreover, certain improvement in ,efiiciency is obtainable by employing the invention herein described, and
longer service is insured for the driving belt.
than is obtainable without my in'iprovement.
Having now described the apparatus embodying my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, the following:
that with the spaced 1. The combination with a plurality of 80 pulley, comprising an opposing pair of grooved pulley wheels spaced to ahne with the edges of the belt and positioned adjacent to the driving pulley, substantially as set forth. I
2. The combination with a sheet delivery table comprising a plurality of parallel advancing rolls, driving mechanism therefor including an under-running belt engaging said rolls and its driving pulley, of an adjustable belt-centering appliance adapted to be positioned'in advance of said pulley, including a supporting frame and two grooved pulley-wheels in opposing relation spaced apart to engage the edges of said belt ad jacent vto said driving pulley, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I do now affix my signature. J 1
REUBEN HI TGHCOCK.
