Abstract

718,434. Feeding webs. DUNGLER, J. Sept. 20, 1951 [Sept. 25, 1950], No. 22069/51 Class 100 (1). [Also in Group VIII] Feeding means, for introducing an excess of fabric into the clips of a clip tenter, comprises a pair of intake rollers for the fabric, means for rotating the intake rollers so that the peripheral speed thereof exceeds the speed of travel of the clips of the tenter, two superimposed guideplates located at each edge of the fabric leaving the intake rollers, one on each side of the fabric for maintaining the fabric unpleated, overfeeding means located at each edge of the fabric immediately before the beginning of the clip track of the tenter and arranged to be displaced laterally with the guide-rails for the clips of the tenter, and means adapted to impart to the overfeeding means and also to the fabric a surface-speed that is greater than the peripheral speed of the intake rollers. A shaft 1, Fig. 2, drives pulleys 3 through bevel gears 2, while the pulleys 3 drive a shaft 9 through a variable ratio drive, adjustable by a handle 6, and through chain wheels 7 and 8. The shaft 9 carries a roller 10 which co-operates with a pressure roller 11. The shaft 9 drives a chain wheel 21 on a shaft 22 through a chain wheel 16 and a friction clutch 17a, 17b adjustable by a handle 18a. The shaft 22, Fig. 4, has a slidable sleeve 22a keyed thereto near each end, the sleeves 22a each driving a roller 24 of the overfeeding device through chain wheels 22c and 22e. The roller 24 is journalled in a bracket 22f secured to a carriage rotatable relatively to the sleeve 22a, but slidable therewith. The roller 24 cooperates with an inclined conical roller 25 rotatably mounted on a spindle 26, the shaft 26 being attached to a sleeve 27 rotatably mounted on a branch 28a of a stem comprising branches 28a, 28b, 28c. The branch 28b is adjustably clamped by a clamp 30 to a carriage 31 slidable along a bar 34. A tenter guide rail 50 pivotally mounted at its front end is slidably mounted in a carriage at its rear in order to allow the rail to assume a correct lateral position with respect to the fabric selvedge. Pivotal movement of the guide-rail 50 causes corresponding lateral movements of the rollers 24 and 25 through pivotallyconnected plates 51 and 52, and a link 28g pivotally connecting branch 28c and a bracket 28k secured to the guide-rail 50. In operation, a web is drawn by the rollers 10 and 11, Fig. 2, at a lower linear speed than the peripheral speed of rollers 24 and 25, thus tensioning the fabric, the degree of tensioning being adjustable by adjustment of the friction clutch by the handle 18a. Fabric folds are removed by horizontal guide-plates 36 and 37. The fabric is guided to the clips in their open position as seen in Fig. 4, the clips having passed around the driving pulley 49, Fig. 2, and being held open by a finger 43, Fig. 4, engaging a guide 44. The fabric edge rests on the table 40 of the clip slightly below the contacting surfaces of the rollers 24 and 25, the fabric being prevented from engaging the faller 41 by a tongue (not shown), extending from the plate 37. Since the rollers 24 and 25 feed the fabric at a higher linear speed than that of the tenter clips an excess of fabric is fed, by the rollers 24 and 25, between successive clips, such excess being distributed in slots in the table 40. When the finger 43 reaches a recess 46, Fig. 2, in the guide 44 the faller 41, Fig. 4, drops. In a modification, the rollers 24 and 25 may be replaced by endless bands having ribs which engage in the manner of gear teeth.
