Abstract

893,122. Laying and cutting fabric. CUTTING ROOM APPLIANCES CORPORATION. April 23, 1960, No. 14333/60. Classes 31 (1) and 42 (2). [Also in Group XXIII] A cloth-laying machine comprises a carriage 10 movable over a table 12, a feed roll 72 driven by movement of the carriage, cloth carrying means 24 supported by the carriage and a swingable frame 50 carrying a cloth guide roll 58 movable with relation to the feed roll between a cloth threading position in which the guide roll is remote from the feed roll and a feeding position in which the guide roll is disposed laterally adjacent the feed roll, the path of travel of the cloth in said feeding position being from the cloth carrying means under the guide roll and over the feed roll, the guide roll being disposed with respect to the feed roll to provide substantial surface engagement of the cloth with the feed roll. In the arrangement shown a cloth-laying machine 10 mounted on a table 12 spreads layers of cloth 14 from a roll 16 mounted on carrier 24. The machine 10 is guided on table 12 by tracks 30 engaging wheels 34. In order to guide and feed the cloth to the table there is provided a swingable frame 50 carrying guide roll 58 which is provided with adjustable sleeves having flanges 66. The frame 50 is swingable about pivot 72 between the fabrics threading position shown in Fig. 1 and a closed operating position or feeding position shown in Fig. 4, in which the fabric wraps around the positively-driven feed roller 78. The drive for roll 78 is taken from one of the wheels 34 by chain- and-sprocket gearing and is such that the roll is always driven in the same direction irrespective of the direction of movement of the carriage. The carrier 24 rides on an upper pair of crossmembers 22 and can be adjusted transversely by chain means so as to adjust the longitudinal side edge of the travelling fabric to the feed table. A cutting device 260 (Fig. 11) is mounted at one end of the carriage and comprises a cutter box 262 carrying the cutter assembly 264 which can be traversed horizontally across the table by chain 474 driven through worm and wormwheel from motor 496. The whole cutter box assembly can be raised and lowered on rollers 270 riding in channels 258, 258<SP>1</SP> by a chain-andsprocket mechanism driven from a hand wheel. The chain 474 used to reciprocate the cutter assembly is also used to drive the cutting disc 408 as the assembly moves. Means are provided for selectively buffing the cutting edge of the cutting disc during operation thereof. It consists of a pair of buffing wheels 556 (not shown) arranged on either side of the cutting disc and kept parallel therewith in the non- operational position, the wheels being selectively angularly movable to bring them into contact with the cutting disc when required. In operation with the frame 50 in the open threading position (Fig. 1) the cloth is draped over roll 58 and is brought into proper side adjustment with guide 80 by wheels 256 which adjust the carrier transversely. The fabric is then removed from the guide roll 58 and draped over the feed roll 78 and the frame 50 is moved to the operating position (Fig. 4) to achieve the desired wrap around of the feed roll 78. The cloth is led from the feed roll 78 through the cutter box to the table 12. At the end of a lay the cloth may be cut by operating a switch to effect a cutting stroke of the cutter assembly 264.
