Abstract

718,336. Windscreen washers. LUCAS (INDUSTRIES), Ltd., J. Sept. 4, 1953, [Sept. 15, 1952.] No. 23092/52. Class 138 (1). In a vehicle windscreen washer of the type comprising a pump, the suction stroke of which is effected by hand or power means and the delivery stroke by a spring, a nozzle adapted to direct a small jet of water on to the windscreen, and means for supporting the nozzle on the vehicle body at a position in front of the windscreen, means are provided for effecting oscillation of the jet to cause it to sweep over an adequate area of the windscreen. Washing liquid in a bottle g is caused to flow through a pipe p and flexible pipe s to a nozzle d, pivotally mounted on the vehicle engine bonnet b, by means of a diaphragm pump. The diaphragm k is caused to effect a suction stroke by means of a rod m reciprocated by a flexible cable o operated by hand or mechanical means, and to effect a delivery stroke by means of a spring n. Known valves r, q, are interposed in the liquid circuit. Cam-like notches on the rod co-operate with a roller u on a stirrup t connected by a flexible cable e to the pivoted nozzle d. When the pump is actuated oscillatory motion is transmitted to the nozzle against the action of a spring f, and the liquid jet v sweeps upwardly and downwardly on to the windscreen a. In another embodiment, the nozzle is fixed relative to the bonnet and a throttling valve is interposed in the pipe s, the valve being oscillated by the cable e to cause fluctuations in the velocity of the liquid supplied to the nozzle and consequent deviations in the direction of the jet v. In a further embodiment having a fixed nozzle the cable e is dispensed with and the cam-like notches co-operate with a spring pawl so that the diaphragm moves in jerks and thus causes the jet to issue at a fluctuating rate. A piston pump may be used in lieu of that shown, and oscillation of the jet may be produced by other means co-ordinated with the pump action.
