Abstract
718,108. Container closures. MAURER, A. Oct. 2, 1951, No. 22961/51. Class 125 (3). A closure device for jars, cans, &c., has a cover 14, the outer edge of which rests on a packing ring 13 in a groove 12 on the upper wall I of a constriction 7 in the neck of the container, which cover is pressed on to the packing by a resilient annular tensioning element 18.having alternate inwardly and outwardly extending slots 19, 20 to render it easily deformable. The centrally apertured disc 18 has in its inner opening a. supporting ring 21 which is moved up and down a threaded spindle 23 by a nut 22 the spindle head 24 being secured in a recess 25 of the cover 14. The container neck is flanged at its upper edge 8 to form a channel in which is a reinforcing ring 9 having a bevelled surface 10. When the nut 22 is screwed down the disc 18 expands and bears against the bevelled surface 10 and the cover 14 is urged into its packing ring 13 by a lever action. A vacuum in the jar can be broken by removing a screw 26. In a modification Fig. 4 the pressure is applied to the centre of the disc by a bell crank lever 35 having a roller 38 at its end engaging a cup-like ring 21a. In a further modification the disc 18 is actuated by an articulated lever connected to the cup 21a.
