Abstract
A crystalline compound sensitive to light and X-rays is formed by bringing together vapours containing the constituent elements of the compound with the vapour of the desired impurity and allowig the semi-conductor to precipitate in the form of crystals from the mingled vapours. As described, the crystal is cadmium sulphide and is produced by mixing vaporized cadmium with hydrogen sulphide. Mercuric sulphide or cadmium selenide may be similarly produced. The impurity or activating agent is less than 1 per cent. of copper, silver or manganese, or less than 0.01 per cent. of indium.
