Abstract
717,659. Stapling fibres. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Dec. 24, 1952 [Dec. 28, 1951], No. 32723/52. Class 120(3) Stapling apparatus in which continuous fil-. aments are fed through a radial passageway- 7 in a rotating disc member 4 to a stationary cutting knife 6 comprises a protruding insert 5 composed of soft, shaveable material which is resistant to deformation under the action of the centrifugal force to which it is subjected, but is easily shaved or cut by the knife without marring the cutting edge during slight variation in the circle of rotation due to mechanical unbalance. Examples of "shaveable material" which are stated to have Knoop hardness values from 12 to 90 include lead alloys, alloys rich in tin, alloys of copper and lead, alloys rich in bismuth, and organic plastic materials such as methyl methacrylate polymers, nylon, polystyrene, and vinylidene halide interpolymers. The cutting angle of the knife is from 25 degrees to 35 degrees and the clearance angle (B) is from 0 degrees to 5 degrees.
