Abstract
717,523. Cam mechanism. BISHOP, R., JOHNSTON, R. H., and WHITLOCK, G. B. R. May 5, 1953 [Feb. 5, 1952], No. 3053/52. Class 80 (3) [Also in Group XXXIV] In a steering gear wherein a helical cam or worm 1 on the steering shaft is engaged by one or more pins, rollers or the like, on a rocker arm linked to the road wheels of a vehicle, the cam is supported at one end by a plain bush 4 and at the other end by a threaded extension 7 on the cam which engages a threaded bore in the housing to constitute a radial and thrust bearing. The thread has a V-section groove and a slow pitch preferably of opposite hand to that of the cam, the axial displacement of the cam in operation being taken into account in its design. In a modification the threaded extension engages an internally-threaded bush which is rotatable in the housing and is adjustably clamped by a nut to facilitate initial positioning of the cam. Alternatively the end of the cam may have an internally threaded recess engaged by a threaded plug rotatably adjustable in the housing. In a further construction an extension of the cam is formed with a number of closely spaced annular grooves of V- section, Fig. 3 (not shown), engaged by complementary ribs on the inner surfaces of a split bush secured in the housing.
