Abstract

Thiamin chloride hydrochloride is obtained by chlorinating thiamin bromide hydrobromide with gaseous chlorine in the presence of a bromine absorber, e.g. a phenol, a keto acid or ester, an aromatic amine, a heterocyclic nitrogen compound, an aromatic hydrocarbon or an olefinic hydrocarbon. The chlorination may be effected in aqueous solution and the bromine absorbent may be recovered by solvent extraction. Examples disclose the use of phenol, acetoacetic ester and pyridine as bromine absorbers.
