Abstract

<PICT:0716603/III/1> Sea water is distilled by passing exhaust steam from auxiliary engines through the coils of the evaporator which contains the sea-water, the vapour space of the evaporator being connected, preferably via a heat exchanger for condensing the water vapour generated in the evaporator, to a condenser which is evacuated by means of exhaust steam which flows in parallel with that supplied to the coils of the evaporator. The condensate from the coils of the evaporator and that from the vacuum condenser are led to a boiler feed water tank. The apparatus shown comprises two groups of auxiliary engines 1 and 11, an evaporator 4 heat exchanger 14, and vacuum condenser 10; the condenser 10 being connected via pipe 19 and valve 20 to heat exchanger 14, which is itself connected to the vapour space of evaporator 4 via pipe 16. Heat exchanger 14 and vacuum condenser 10 are cooled by circulating sea water through pipes 15 and 13 respectively. Auxiliary engines 1 feed exhaust steam through pipes 2 and 5 to the coils 3 of evaporator 4. Exhaust steam from engines 1 is also supplied (as a source of heat) to boilers (not shown) via pipe 7, and via pipes 8 and 9 to vacuum condenser 10; pipe 8 being fitted with a valve 22 in order to maintain a steady back pressure in the exhaust of engines 1. The exhaust steam from engines 11 is supplied via pipe 9 to vacuum condenser 10, a steam jet air ejector serving to create a vacuum in the condenser. The condensates from condenser 10 and coils 3 flow, via pipes 23 and 24 respectively, to boiler feed water tank 21. The fresh water condensed in heat exchanger 14 is drained off through pipe 17 to a storage tank (not shown) at atmospheric pressure.
