Abstract

652,217. Heat pumps. EVANS, J. H. Oct. 7, 1947, No. 30405/49. Divided out of 652,162. [Class 29] In a heat pump driven by an internal combustion engine or gas turbine 2 the waste heat in the engine or turbine cooling water or the exhaust gases is used to superheat the refrigerant vapour leaving the compressor. Compressed refrigerant vapour leaves the compressor 1 by a pipe 4, enters a heat exchanger 5 in which circulates cooling water from the jacket of the engine 2 and passes to a pressure vessel 7 containing tubes through which pass the exhaust gases from the engine supplied by a pipe 8 and passing to the atmosphere by a pipe 40. The superheated refrigerant is led by a pipe 9 to condensers 10-13 forming the heating means for a building &c., the condensed refrigerant passing to a vessel 19 and through a heat exchanger 21 to a float controlled vessel 22 feeding a flooded evaporator 25. Liquid or gaseous medium forming the' low temperature source of heat circulates through the evaporator by pipes 28, 29 and the vaporized refrigerant 'returns to the compressor by pipe 26, vessel 22, pipe 30, heat exchanger 21 and pipe 3. The supply of cooling water for the engine 2 is maintained by a feed tank 36. The exhaust gas heat exchanger 7 has an explosion relief door 38 and a condensate drain 39. Specification 652,162 is referred to.
