Abstract
A tablet for use in treating peptic ulcers comprises 1/2 to 12 parts by weight of dried milk mixed with 1 part by weight of antacid material, the mixture being pressed into a tablet which when sucked by the patient will dissolve in the saliva and pass into the stomach in small amounts to produce a continuous neutralization of the acid in the gastric juice. The milk is full cream whole milk, defatted whole milk or malted milk, to which may be added (a) up to 10 per cent casein or calcium caseinate or the enzymatic digest of lactalbumin and (b) up to 2 per cent of one or more of sodium bicarbonate, potassium bicarbonate and sodium chloride. Specified antacids are magnesium trisilicate, dried aluminium hydroxide gel, magnesium oxide, magnesium carbonate and calcium carbonate. Preferred tablets contain 0.1 to 0.5 per cent oil of peppermint and malted milk. The malted milk is prepared by mixing 1 part by weight of dried full cream whole milk with 1 to 6 parts by weight of maltose and dextrins produced by the enzymatic reaction of 1 to 3 parts by weight of malted barley with 3 to 1 parts by weight of a cereal flour such as of wheat or of barley. Tablets are of 5 to 70 grains, and preferably 48 grains weight and 0.25 to 1.5 inches diameter. Tablets of the desired characteristics are obtained by an initial tabletting at a pressure of 13 to 16, and preferably 15, tons per sq. inch, followed by granulation of the so produced tablets and then tabletting of the hard granules so formed at a pressure of 8 to 15, and preferably 12, tons per sq. inch.
